Bulky Item Collection

South Lake Refuse & Recycling offers many ways for residential customers to dispose of unwanted items that cannot go in the curbside carts/bins. If your items are still useful, we suggest that you try and find a reuse center that will take it as a donation before calling us to schedule a collection.

The Bulky Item Collection program is available to all South Lake Refuse & Recycling residential customers.

Collection Guidelines

  • Each year our customers are entitled to:
    • Up to two (2) free bulky items collected per year. 
    • See list below for which items qualify for free pick up and which items incur a fee.
  • You must call our office at (707) 994-8613 to schedule a collection at least 24 hours prior to your regular collection day.
  • Collection of these items will be on your regular collection day in a Bulky Item Collection vehicle.
  • Cancelation of this service MUST happen by 4pm the day before the scheduled collection to avoid forfeiting this collection in the future at no cost.
  • Items cannot be longer than 8 feet or taller than 6 feet.
  • Items must weigh less than 200 pounds.
  • Items must be easily moved by one person and can be collected without the assistance of special loading equipment (such as fork lifts or cranes).

  • Carpet & Padding (tie in bundles no larger than 4’ by 2’)

APPLIANCE COLLECTION

The following appliances can be picked up for a $10.00 collection fee which will be added to your regular service collection bill.

  • Air Conditioner
  • Dishwasher
  • Dryer
  • Refrigerator or Freezer
  • Stove or Oven
  • Washing Machine
  • Water Heater

What is NOT accepted in this program?

Prohibited items are solid waste (trash), organic materials (food scraps or yard debris), concrete or dirt, hazardous waste, recyclable materials, automobiles, large auto parts, pianos, or trees.

Free E-Waste Drop Off

E-Waste Example: PrinterIT’S SHOCKING… How fast electronic products become obsolete! PLEASE do not put E-Waste in your garbage; they contain toxic materials not allowed in landfills. The good news is that you can drop these items off for free at the South Lake Recycling Center.

Ink Cartridge Mail-In Recycling Program

Currently only 30% of ink cartridges are recycled. It’s estimated that over 375 million cartridges are thrown away each year!

We want to keep these items out of landfills and you can help out at no cost to you with the Free Mail-in Ink Recycling Service.

Just follow these steps:

  • Gather 4 or more empty or used ink cartridges.
  • Request a free shipping label from the 
  • Place items in an envelope with the label attached.
  • Hand to your postal carrier.
  • All ink cartridges are accepted, regardless of their make, model, or condition.
    Please note: No toner, LaserJet cartridges or drums are accepted.

South Lake Fire Safe Council Chipping Program

Chipping dead and dying branches helps homeowners create a defensible space and reduce fire fuel loads in their neighborhood. The South Lake Fire Safe Council assists with fire prevention and safety by providing low-cost chipping services and other fire safety programs.

Lake County Tire Recycling Amnesty Program

Tire Image: Recycle in Lake CountyEach year, the Lake County Public Services Department hosts a Tire Amnesty Program, which allows residents to drop-off tires at no charge, until all grant funds have been expended. Please call the recycling hotline at 707-262-1618 to confirm the program is still funded for the year.

Under the program, residents of Lake County may dispose of up to nine passenger or light truck tires, up to R19.5, free of charge. Tires will be accepted with and without rims. The Amnesty Program is not for commercial, heavy duty, farm, or heavy equipment tires.

Residents may take up to nine tires to either South Lake Recycling Center or to Lake County Waste Solutions. Customers will be asked to show proof of Lake County residency and sign a form showing number and origin of tires. No commercial tire, auto repair, or salvage businesses.

Sharps Drop Off

Image of Sharps for DisposalSafe disposal of home-generated used sharps is important: these items do not belong in your garbage or recycling. Sharps in puncture resistant containers with lids may be dropped off at the South Lake Refuse Recycling Center.

Sharps Disposal by Mail

Safely dispose of sharps with postage-paid shipping containers (disposal costs included) for a $5 co-pay at the following pharmacies.
